July 9 - Day 4

7/9/2015

What a day!  We got so much accomplished, and had FUN doing it!

  • Multiplication practice with 2-digit by 2-digit (remember to drop that '0' when multiplying by the 10's place value!)

  • Math games
  • PIG - Each person rolls a die to determine who will go first.  After that, two dice are used - roll and add the numbers together and add that sum to your mental total so far.  IF you roll a '1' it is the next person's turn.  If you roll 'snake eyes' (double 1s), you loose all of your points so far and it's the next person's turn
  • Going to Boston (no idea why it's called this...) - you need three dice, pencil and  paper (to keep track of the totals for each turn).  Roll all three die and choose the highest number in the roll - se it aside.  Repeat for the two dice remaining.  Roll the last die.  Add all of these numbers together for your turn total.  Pass the dice to the next person.
  • Add/Subtract/Multiply - you'll need two dice, pencil and paper.  Roll the dice:
  1. Add the numbers together
  2. Subtract the smallest from the largest numbers
  3. Multiply the two numbers together
  4. Add ALL of your answers together

  • Long division - remember that dad must shave beard, or that dangerous monkeys swipe bananas!
  • Divide
  • Multiply
  • Subtract
  • Bring down

Remember that you can check to make sure you divided correctly by multiplying the quotient (the answer in division) by the divisor (the number you are using to divide the dividend with).  Don't forget to add in any remainders!

All the best,
Ms. Handel

July 8 - Day 3

7/9/2015

July 7 - Day 2

7/8/2015

Where to even begin?  It was a busy, busy day again with Math up to our ears and a fire drill thrown in for safety.  Our class was delightfully respectful of the safety procedures during this quick drill.  Well done, class!

  • Word problem starter
  • Review of place value up to 100 000 000 and down to 0.001
  • Regrouping for addition and subtraction practice/review
  • Rounding whole and decimals numbers
  • Daily Math Practice #1: Rounding due in at the end of the day

Yes, we managed to pack ALL of that into one session day.  By all means, practice, practice, practice with your children at home on the concepts we discuss and review in class.  One of the best ways to solidify knowledge is for students to become the teacher to others once they have the concept down pat.

All the best,
Ms. H

PS - Please, please, please get any overdue forms in by tomorrow (Wednesday, July 8), as I have plans to show students an online resource to help them with Math concepts for the next few weeks (and will continue to make available to them over the summer).  Your child can only be granted access to school computers once the forms have been completed and returned.

July 6 - Day 1

7/6/2015

We survived!  It was a whirlwind of a day filled with lots of information, which included an assembly and a Math assessment.

Students were handed out a four page safety package for parents to fill out completely and bring back to school tomorrow.  Please and thank you!

I reminded students to bring in a book to enjoy once they have finished assignments or come in from recess.  I plan on a few minutes each day for some silent reading to get everyone's minds back on the learning track after a fun time outside.

I also reminded students to please bring the supplies they will need for the next 14 session days (see post below).

It is very important that students arrive on time and for all the session days in order to get the most out of this experience.  We will 'hit the ground running' with Math each day starting at 9:00am.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

All the best,
Ms. Handel

Please make sure to give me your child's name when contacting me.  Thank you!

Reading is important!

6/26/2015

Dear Parents and Students,

Please make sure to bring a book (or two) to class for the summer session.  We will have access to Alex Hope's library, but it will not happen until later in the week.  Please bring a fun book to read if you finish ahead of the class.

Thank you,
Ms. H.

Welcome!

Dear Families,

My name is Ms. Handel and I will be working with your child this summer in the Grade 4/5 Challenge Math Summer Learning Program.  I have taught all subjects in Grades 5, 6, and 7 in the past five years, but I am particularly fond of teaching Math!  Each day our class will engage in a combination of reviewing Math they have learned in the past, as well as looking ahead to the Math they will be learning in the upcoming school year. I am confident that your child will have a memorable time meeting new friends while further developing their Math skills.

I am requesting some supplies please be brought in on the first day of school:

·       A 1” binder (or anything similar to quickly take assignments out and put them away – not duotangs)
·       1 pack of pencils
·       1 pencil sharpener
·       1 eraser
·       1 blue pen
·       1 Math set (including ruler, compass, and protractor)
·       1 pack of pencil crayons
·       1 glue stick
·       1 pair of scissors
·       1 highlighter

Please make sure your child is at school each day, arrives on time, and has all the supplies they will need to be successful.  We will start each session right away as we have lots of learning to do.  Please check out my classroom website on a regular basis to find out what we have learned in class at: http://www.mshandel.net/summer-session-2015

Thank you and, if you have any questions, feel free to contact me at [email protected]

I am looking forward to meeting you on July 6th, and working with your child this summer!

Sincerely,
Ms. Handel
