Today was a continuation from yesterday's division lesson.  I strongly encourage students to practice the Math skills at home, especially if they find the concept challenging.  The only way you get better at ANYTHING is to practice. 

Students received a large place-mat style learning tool where they get a step-by-step break down on how to add,  subtract, multiply, and divide with regrouping.  It also has key vocabulary words and definitions for quick reference at home.

I'll see you all tomorrow for our last day!  Don't forget to bring bags to put all of your school supplies in.

We continued on with multiplication today, then stepped it up a bit by multiplying 2-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers.  Students were given their multiplication packages to take home and practice on yesterday in preparation for their quiz this morning.

Today we worked on learning and reinforcing how to multiply numbers.  We started off with multiplying single, double, and triple digit numbers by one digit, and finished the day with multiplying numbers by groups of 10s, 100s, and 1000s.

There are a few really good links here you can look at when you're at home to help reinforce the learning we have done in the classroom today. 

​Students received all of the quizzes they have completed to date (they've been sitting there, just waiting for us to hand them out and today we had a few minutes to spare to do just that!).  I have promised students a minty treat if they bring back the quizzes signed by a parent or guardian.  Some students were concerned about the mistakes they made on the tests and I tell them (and you) this: mistakes can be made - it's fine to make mistakes and a regular part of the learning process - but you must LEARN from your mistakes.  If your child got a question wrong, please take a moment to go over these with them.

Today we started working on our multiplication unit.

I introduced a number of vocabulary words to students today and will continue to use them in class:

• factor(s) (the numbers you multiply together to get the product
• product (the answer for a multiplication equation)
• prime number (a number that is only divisible by 1 and itself: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13...)
• composite number (a number that has multiple factor pairs: the number 12 is composite because it has the factors of 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12)
• multiple (any multiple of a number: the multiples of 3 are 3, 6, 9, 12, 15...)
• array (a grid style grouping of to show two factors multiplied to get a product)

We completed our own multiplication charts and students will get these back on Monday, freshly laminated so they last a good long while.

We also completed our 1-100 prime numbers chart where we discussed what makes a prime number and how we could see patterns within the 100 grid as we filled in composite numbers with colour.  

After that was complete, we talked about divisibility rules and how you could tell if a number is divisible by 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, and 10 (well...we'll get to 10 on Monday!).

And if all that learning wasn't enough, we also helped out our little buddy class with their second Freezie sale today, where profits will go to LAPS and BC Cancer Society.

On Thursday we worked on more difficult subtraction questions where there was multiple regrouping ('borrowing').

​We also practiced word problems (don't forget that word problems get word answers, too!) and reviewed place value with whole numbers and decimals, and expanded form and standard form of numbers.

Today was all about subtracting.

We demonstrated how and why subtraction works the way it does by looking at whether we had to regroup (borrow) from the place value number to the left of the number we were wanting to subtract with:

  34 2
- 1 7 1


Here you can take 2-1 = 1 in the ones place value, but when you get the to the tens place value, you're unable to take 7 from 4.

You would end up with a negative number, which doesn't work.  Instead, you have to regroup one group of one hundreds over to the tens place value:

After you regroup, you can solve the rest of the equation:

Practice, practice, practice.  Roll the dice to make up numbers, write them down, and solve to find the difference between them.

The Khan Academy has a great series of video tutorials you can look at for extra practice at home, too!

Subtracting 3-digit numbers (regrouping)

Today we practiced adding and regrouping for four, five, and six digit numbers.

One of the activities that students enjoyed after we completed our lesson for the day was rolling a handful of dice to create the largest number they could out of the numbers they rolled, and adding it to another number they created from their next dice rolls.  Students worked in pairs or groups of three for this activity and checked each other's adding skills as we went.  After they mastered this, students were asked to make the smallest possible numbers from their dice rolls and add those numbers together.

Math practice can (and should) be fun over the summer!  I hope that students use some of the games we have played in class to reinforce the ideas we have learned during our time together.

Today the class wrote their decimals place value quiz and some trends I saw were that this concept needs to be practiced and reinforced more than the whole number place value lessons.  I, personally, always found decimals to be trickier to learn than whole numbers, mostly because you have to name them differently than you do whole numbers because the first digit to the right of a decimal point is the tenths (a single whole number split into 10 equal parts).

Please help your child go over the concepts we learn each day - if you have them teach you what they learned in class, they master the math that much sooner.

Today we worked on place value with decimal numbers and rounding with decimals.

Students went home with some sheets on decimals they could work on over the weekend to stay sharp for their quiz on Monday morning, along with a handy sheet for practicing writing their decimals in the correct place value columns.

We also helped our little buddy class sell Freezies to raise money for BC Cancer Society and LAPS.  We had a great day for our sales and look forward to next Friday!
