These will be the ways that students can show what they have learned in the time they have spent researching their inquiry question(s) for Socials regarding Ancient Greece.

So far we have had several research sessions on the computers and iPads in class, as well as time to discuss myths, heroes, life in Ancient Greece, some of the more prominent City States, etc...

Students are now being asked to complete a project of their choosing to show what knowledge they have acquired.  All final projects will be due on June 17th for a 2 - 3 minute presentation to the class.

If their project is not ready for Friday, June 17th's presentation, it will have a negative impact on their overall mark.

Ancient Egypt Project outline

1/5/2016

The big Ancient Egypt project is here!  There will be five larger pieces, each due a week apart.  Students went over the outline of the five-week project today in class and asked a number of excellent questions.

This project is going to represent a large portion of your child's Term 2 Social Studies report card mark.  They will have a full five weeks to work on the overall project, breaking down to one week given for each individual topic.
- I will hand out the expanded criteria sheets for each topic once I have received their completed and signed project outline, due 8:30am, Thursday, January 7.

- If a student picks enough large topics (40-50 points each) for a few of the stations, they are still responsible for completing a topic for the remaining stations.  If their overall total for the topics they choose exceed 150 points, they will be marked on the new total - they will not receive 'extra credit' because they chose more complex topics.

- Due dates are firm.  If you are going to be away, please let me know and make arrangements to bring in your completed topic of the week before it has gone past the due date.

- Students are expected to hand in their very best work - incomplete assignments will not be accepted.

- Students are expected to use their class time appropriately and will also be expected to work on their project at home.

- Where you go, your project goes.  I will not allow phone calls home if someone forgets to bring their project to school that day.  I am giving time in class as well as Library research blocks for students to work on their projects at school.  If you are at home, the project is at home.  If you are at school, your project is at school.

- Students must use at least one of our library's Ancient Egypt reference books as a source for each topic.

My Town Criteria Sheet

10/19/2015

We have been working on the class creating their own town maps for the past week.  They have had plenty of time in class to complete their project and the finished work will be handed in on Wednesday, October 21.

My Town Criteria Sheet

  1. Include a compass with N, S, E, W, NE, NW, SE, SW
  2. Include the name of your town at the top of the page, underlined.  Write your name in the bottom right hand corner.
  3. You must have at least 8 named streets
  4. You must have at least 2 named oceans
  5. You must include a legend on the right hand side of the page near the bottom with AT LEAST ten (10) symbols
  6. Must be fine lined in black and erase pencil lines
  7. No write space – the entire project must be coloured or shaded in
  8. You must include five (5) navigational questions based on your map
  • For example: If you start at Rock Street and go north, then turn west at the school, which side will the mountains be on?

A classmate will be answering these questions.

Be neat – use a ruler.
Make light pencil lines so you can erase them later.

The class had two periods to work on this assignment today (and several last week) and are expected to hand in their completed assignment for Wednesday.  Both the map and questions will be needed for Wednesday's Socials class as we will be exchanging maps and questions with each other in order to answer the navigational questions.

All the best,
Ms. H.

Water Consumption

5/27/2015

http://www.surrey.ca/city-services/3639.aspx

I gave it the ol' college try last night when I got home from school to find out how much water came out of the bathroom shower in a set time.  I gathered my measuring cup and a stopwatch...

Picture
and in just over 10 seconds (10.39 seconds) I was able to gather 950mL of water.  If we extrapolate from that (fancy word!) we can estimate that for every minute of water flow we will have approximately 6L of water.  If you have a 5 minute shower, that comes to 30L of water.  If you have a 10 minute shower, you use 60L of water...

Mini-project

3/10/2015

Students have chosen the format of their project, from puppet show, to newspaper articles, interviews, to posters...they had the choice in HOW to show me what they know.

They will be addressing these four questions within their mini-project.  ALL questions must be addressed with factual information, which means that students are using their own experiences of:

  • how they are a global citizen with rights and responsibilities
  • how they are part of the Global Village that has been created with the interconnectivity between people on our planet
  • how they are citizens in their local environment (Aldergrove)
  • how they are in the 'Business of Caring' by helping others (donations, fundraising, etc)

Country Project Criteria

1/12/2015

We recently brainstormed the possible criteria to use for our upcoming Socials projects.  Each student chose a country in the world (no two students chose the same country) and they researched books in the Library afterward.

Students will have access to the COWs and the Library on a regular basis in the next few weeks in order to ensure their projects are well researched and thoroughly completed.  If a student is away during the school week, they are responsible for making sure they are on track for the project.

Due date: Thursday, February 12th.
Presentations: Thursday, February 12th and Friday, February 13th.
