Today's activities:
"They're, There, and Their" confusables worksheet for a starter. We went over some ways to remember which one has which meaning. My favourites are:
Sentence corrections (grammar/spelling) using student examples. there were five examples with a variety of corrections to be made such as apostrophes in places they shouldn't be (or not there at all), pluralization issues, missing words, etc... I left the marking key up on the overhead after we finished marking for students to have a reference to work from.
Dictionary Stroll - I have had several students come up to me in the past few days to tell me that the vocabulary word they are looking for is 'not there.' I handed out the class set of dictionaries we have available to us in the room and we did a bit of a dictionary stroll. We discussed how the words at the top of the page of the dictionary are the 'range' of words they will find on that particular page. We practiced searching for random words I would give them to look for (with great success!), then I made them all a deal that if they came to me with their dictionary and told me the word they're looking for isn't there...and I find it...they owe me time. Needless to say that there were no students who owed time today, as everyone look a bit more care in looking for words.
Despereaux - I read chapters 9-11 to the class while they followed along listening or looking for answers to the questions given and the vocabulary words.
Homework:
Despereaux chapters 9-11 questions and vocabulary due tomorrow.
"They're, There, and Their" confusables worksheet for a starter. We went over some ways to remember which one has which meaning. My favourites are:
- there = t(here) 'here' is inside 'there' so you can be here or there
- they're = they are If you can replace they're with they are, you're headed in the right direction
- their - are you talking about a possession that belongs to someone or something? Then the one that's spelled funny is the correct choice. Yes...this is seriously how I remember it.
