When it boils down to the most basic rule,
it's to be respectful.
Respect each other, respect the adults in the building, and respect the school itself. What does that look and sound like?
If you are showing up to class late, please respect that our learning is already in progress. Report to the office to sign in late, and go to class with a late slip from one of our administration assistants.
Attending school 'classroom ready'
Listening while the teacher is talking
Be safe
Keep your hands and feet to yourself
Choose your words carefully
Be responsible for yourself
Be polite
Respect other peoples' property
Freeze when announcements are on
Use your classroom time wisely
Electronic devices shouldn't be seen or heard
We discussed each of the school rules and decided that they all have something that connects them: respect and common sense. It 'makes sense' that we follow the rules to be respectful, be safe, be helpful, be kind, and be a good example for other students!

Attending school 'classroom ready'
- this looks like getting to school on time each day
- if you miss a day, make sure to get the assignments you missed and ask questions
- having all of the supplies and assignments ready for the day
- showing up with a positive attitude, ready to contribute to the classroom conversation
Listening while the teacher is talking
- this looks like: you are facing the teacher, there is nothing in your hands to fiddle with
- this sounds like: you are not talking or making noise
Be safe
- this looks like: walking (not running!) in the classroom, all four feet of chairs on the ground when you are sitting, not throwing things around the classroom, etc...
Keep your hands and feet to yourself
- This goes with being safe, polite, and respectful. Grade 5 students are leaders in the school and all the younger grades look up to you now - show them how to behave on the playground and in the hallways.
Choose your words carefully
- Students always say 'no swearing' and I agree, but I want to take it a step further, because sometimes words can hurt others more than a physical action
Be responsible for yourself
- this looks like: handing your work in on time with your name on it, not forgetting gym strip at home, etc...
Be polite
- This looks like: waiting your turn patiently, putting your hand up to ask a question and not interrupting, coming into the classroom quietly if you have been out in the hall, etc...
Respect other peoples' property
- this looks like: returning something in the same condition it was loaned to you, not going into someone else's desk, leave the classroom in the same condition at the end of the day as it looked at the beginning of the day (CLEAN!), etc...
Freeze when announcements are on
- this looks like: stop what you are doing and listen to the announcements - everything out of your hand, freeze where you are in the room, and stop talking. A missed announcement could be a missed lunch in the office for a student, or missed important information for our safety.
- this sounds like: students are silent while announcement are on
Use your classroom time wisely
- I cannot stress this enough - if your teacher has given you class time to work on an assignment, please make good choices about using your class time. Chances are, you won't have much homework if you make good choices of your time.
Electronic devices shouldn't be seen or heard
- the school rule is that student electronic devices (phones, mp3 players, etc...) should either be kept in backpacks (TUNRED OFF) or be left at home. Every year, we all agree that cell phones brought to school for safety of children walking/biking to and from school was completely understandable, but those devices need to be turned off and put away during school hours. If there is an emergency, we will contact parents from the school. Likewise, if there is a reason to call your child, please call the school phone and they will know exactly where to find either myself or your child and we can pass on the message. All students were present when we made the classroom rules and acknowledged that their phone (or other device) would be taken away and kept safe for them at the office until the end of the day when they can collect it from the principal if they had it out during school hours.
