Well, this is it - the last day!  Today we reviewed finding the circumference and area of circles, and the area of parallelograms and triangles.  I'm sure that the little songs that go with the formulas will haunt my students for a while...

Once we wrapped that up, we moved on to theoretical and experimental probability.  Dice were rolled, spinners were spun, games were created and played.  What are the chances they had fun?  I think they're pretty good chances.  :)

Don't forget to check out www.explorelearning.com for Gizmos that my students will have access to until September, and to visit Khan Academy if you want to check out some step-by-step tutorials on different Math concepts through the grades.

I wish you all the best in the remaining summer and hope you have a fantastic year!

Happy Friday,
Ms. Handel

Another jam-packed day!

Today we focused our collective attention on measurement, specifically finding the area of parallelograms, triangles, and circles.

Only one more day to go and still so much to learn!

13/15 days complete and we still have so much to learn...

Today we revisited rotations and reflections in graphing before moving on to converting measurements, measuring, naming, and classifying angles, then discussing perimeter and area.  It was a lot of information to be packed into one day, to be sure!

Tomorrow we will explore perimeter and area in more depth before we move on to circumference and area of circles, so please make sure that your child comes to school with a calculator.

One last thing: this Friday will be HAT DAY at Lynn Fripps, so please feel free to wear something wonderful, functional, or a tribute to your favourite sports team.

See you tomorrow,
Ms. H

We are 12/15 = 4/5 through our Summer Session as of 12 noon today.  Where did the time go?

Today we reviewed plotting and naming coordinates on a four-quadrant graph, then moved on to the different transformations that can be performed with various shapes:
  • translation (slides)
  • reflections (flips)
  • rotations (turns)
I did ask students to take home the package that we worked on these past couple of days in class if they were not able to complete it and still wanted to practice the rotations.  Of course, we'll be reviewing today's lesson before we work on our daily math assessment tomorrow.

Happy Tuesday,

Yikes, we were so busy yesterday that I forgot to post about what we did in the classroom!

On Monday, we explored graphing!  We plotted points on a Cartesian Coordinate system with four quadrants, and gave ordered pair answers for particular coordinates.

Things to remembers:
  • (x, y) always find your value on the x-axis before you move on to the value for the y-axis (a helpful reminder for this is that you have to RUN before you JUMP)
  • (0, 0) is the origin

We also practiced translating, or sliding, images around the four quadrants.

More for Tuesday!

We are 10/15 = 2/3 of the way through summer session, and I'm still amazed at how the time flies!

Today we worked on turning fractions into decimals and we explored terminating and repeating decimals.

The class decided what they want to learn for their final week in Math Challenge Explorations:
  • graphing
  • measurement (including pi)
  • probability

Looking forward to all the fun we get up to next week,
Ms. H

Good day, everyone!  Today we reviewed adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers before moving on to multiplying and dividing fractions.  Don't forget that when you're multiplying or dividing mixed numbers that you need to put them into improper fractions before you move on to the arithmetic.

Hello All!

Today was jam packed with fractions! We reviewed adding like and unlike-denominator fractions then we moved into adding and subtracting mixed numbers.  There was plenty of practice in class and I encourage students to try a few questions on their own at home.  Practice is how we get better at everything, right?

What's on for tomorrow?  Tune in to find out!

Happy Wednesday,

Hello everyone!

Today was another busy day in Math Challenge Explorations.  We reviewed all of the new concepts and vocabulary from yesterday before moving on to adding fractions with like denominators, then adding fractions with unlike denominators.  I reminded students of a great resource out there that they can use to practice all of the Math concepts we have learned so far at Khan Academy.

Take a look around you while you're out and about and notice all the fractions that we use on a daily basis.

Happy Tuesday,
Ms. H

Hello All!

Today was a busy, busy day - we began our fractions unit!

We learned about prime numbers and the divisibility rules on Friday and reviewed these concepts today before beginning.  After that, we discussed and practiced:
  • Numerators and Denominators
  • Equivalent Fractions (and putting fractions into lowest terms)
  • Lowest Common Multiple (LCM)
  • Common Factors
  • Greatest Common Factors (GCF)

Like I said, it was a busy day full of practicing representing fractions and putting them into lowest terms.  This will be the foundation we build on when we move on to adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions throughout the rest of the week.

Happy Monday,
Ms. H
